UNDERWRITER – HEALTH INSURANCE
Position Description
He/she determines the acceptability of insurance risks, based on the insurance company’s guidelines and marketing strategy. He/ she reviews application submitted, evaluates the information given, asks for additional information if necessary, and determines a price. In addition, he/she determines that the risk is properly classified and evaluates the company’s risk portfolio to determine that it is performing correctly. He/she determines the cost of insurance (the insurance premium) by analyzing the claims experience of the policyholder and the “book rates” as computed by an insurance actuary.
Duties include:
Reviewing applications for insurance and comparing applications to loss experience and actuarial studies to determine if the applicant is an acceptable risk
Evaluating future loss potential, e.g., catastrophic loss
Insuring adequate pricing of insurable risks
Preparing insurance quotation for insurance agents
Assisting agents in responding to questions about the proposed coverage and rates
Experience
Five to seven years in insurance industry experience and has been at least as an Asst Mgr level, preferably in Health Insurance
Education
S1, preferably with certificate in Actuary
